DOWNS ROADSIDE PARK & BALLFIELD

At Downs Roadside Park, several improvements have  been completed to enhance the park for both residents and travelers. The Sod & Stubble sign received a fresh coat of paint, updated signage, and a new pamphlet holder so visitors can learn about the history of the area and take the self-guided Sod & Stubble tour. Shelter houses in the park were also repainted, and the concession stand was refreshed with new paint, updated signage, a canopy, and a new water fountain. In addition, the ballfield bleachers received new backing and signage.

The city building located on the northeast corner of the park was also given a facelift with a mural designed to highlight Downs and the surrounding area. Looking ahead, plans are being developed to replace the current playground equipment with new, all-inclusive play structures designed for children of all ages, creating a safe and welcoming space for families to enjoy for many years to come.

DOWNS HISTORICAL RAILROAD DEPOT & GAZEBO PARK

Improvements have also been completed at the downtown Railroad Park and Gazebo area in Downs. The historic gazebo received a new roof, along with added electrical outlets and lighting to better accommodate community events. New landscaping was installed, and benches at the Historical Depot, Railroad Park, and Gazebo area were replaced to improve comfort and accessibility for visitors. These projects were made possible through a combination of donations, grant funding, and Downs Community Connection (DCC) and Downs Historical Society funds.

Holiday decorations at Railroad Park were also enhanced. The long-standing Christmas light displays were refurbished with new LED lighting, and a new 14-foot Christmas tree was added to the collection. Each year, these decorations create a festive holiday display that brightens the downtown park and continues a cherished community tradition.

WELCOME TO DOWNS SIGNS & DOWNTOWN BANNERS

The “Welcome to Downs” signs were replaced with a new design inspired by the original pre-1960s signage that once greeted travelers to the community. New signs were installed at key entrances to town, including the intersection of Highway 24 and Highway 181, the west entrance to Downs near Brush Art, and the Four Mile Corner south of town. These updated signs bring back a touch of historic charm while warmly welcoming visitors and residents alike. Funding for the project was made possible through a combination of grants, community donations, Downs Community Connection (DCC) funds, and support from the Melba Domoney Estate.
